Founded by the
Etruscans, the town became Gaelic and then
Roman. Virgil, the great Latin poet was born
in Mantova in the Roman period.
Capital city of the Duchy
of Gonzaga, Mantova holds important
inheritances of the ancient splendour. In
September, buildings, squares and courtyards,
designed amongst others by Andrea Mantegna,
Giulio Romano and Leon Battista Alberti, become
the ideal place for readers and authors from
all over to come and discuss literature together.
This is Festivaletteratura,
an important cultural happening that brings
a cosmopolitan atmosphere to the centre of
the town.

Typical
dishes
of Mantova mix together influences from Emilia
and Lombardy, also creating original inventions.
The renaissance and noble tastes of pumpkin
"tortelli" and of "alla Stefani"
chicken are put together with traditional
meat ravioli called "agnoli," rice
dishes, luccio in salsa. |
